London Live Coding? August

If you’re reading this, it’s because you signed up (or ticked a box) to be notified about upcoming live coding events in London. If you didn’t mean to do that, or you don’t want it anymore, no hard feelings! But if you’re here for EVENTS… here’s your August update.

AlgoRhythms (FREE)

6th August

This is London’s flagship monthly live coding event. It starts with a meetup where we hang around and jam and share things we’ve made. This section’s great if you’re a beginner wanting to learn what it’s all about!

At 7:30, we pack away the tables and it turns into a club, with open slots all night. That means that ANYONE can sign up on the night to live code some sounds and/or visuals. Or if you’d like, [just] dance or watch or take in the atmosphere (with sounds and sights that radically change every 15 minutes).

AlgoChill (FREE) (NEW)

14th August

A brand new event put on by our very own Laura Porta. It’s like AlgoRhythms (open slots all night) but it’s in a cosier venue with more emphasis on chilled out sounds and calming visuals. Sign up to be part of (maybe) a new London tradition.

Meetup (FREE)

18th August

Our monthly meetups continue, with another guest host (me(!)). Bring questions or ideas or something to show-and-tell … or just come to see what it’s all about.

Special gimmick for this month’s meetup: I invite you to bring something that makes a Sound (!). For example, a shaker, a drum, a laptop, your voice, your body (it’s up to you).

The pub serves food! We make noise in the basement.

Other events

There’s a lot more going on in London! As always, check out our community-curated list at badlondon.events. Here are some highlights.

BugByte: Monoprint Animation Workshop

31st August

BugByte is a (very friendly) animation community and they’re putting on a workshop:

“In this workshop, we will be teaching you the techniques to make your own monoprints, and guiding you the process of making a short, looping animation. Each participant will illustrate a short frame-by-frame animation on paper, which will then be transferred onto the printing surface. Unlike other printmaking techniques where multiple identical impressions can be made, a monoprint will create an ‘one-off’ print, and can allow you to achieve unique textural effects on your prints.

By the end of the session, you will have produced your own animation, along with a series of hand-made monoprints. The monoprint techniques you will learn here can be easily replicated at home, allowing you to continue to explore these medium in your own time. We will be providing all the supplies needed for the workshop, but please dress prepared to get a little messy!

No prior experience in either printmaking and animation is needed!”

EMOMs

You may or may not know this but AlgoRhythms and AlgoChill are based on the popular “EMOM” event format, which stands for Electronic Music Open Mic. If you enjoy our events, you might also enjoy all the other EMOMs going in London. There’s one tomorrow, for example!
