brief lore drop about nudel weather:

people started implementing weirder and weirder features. they were mostly based around names at the time. eg: everyone’s name was set to “pastagang” to stop people taking personal credit. then someone changed it so everyone got named as the current mantra. and a load of radical changes followed this.

when the novelty wore off, i think people didn’t want to completely remove them, and also people wanted to make space for more radical changes, so pastagang made the weather system. loads of ridiculous weathers got made during that time, and conditional mantras also appeared that are tied to weathers, so “pastagang” could be a mantra during the “everyone is mantra” weather to give the possibility of everyone being called “pastagang” again.

one of the weirdest weathers that was mostly added as a joke was “no nudel” weather that literally disabled nudel for one day every month. despite being a joke, people took it on seriously and saw it as a sign to take a break! and to prepare for a world where nudel does die, and it will die eventually.

it became a day to switch to different tools. it forces you to not be dependant on it. it also makes conversations like this one happen! it has led to some non-nudel jams like this one happen, which happened on a no nudel day.

the weather became ingrained by talks like this one.

eventually, people realised that the “no nudel” weather became broken due to some bug (that’s how you know it’s pastagang). however, this made it become even more of a joke. because “no nudel” day became a self-enforced weather.

in fact, all weathers were self-enforced anyway. back when nudel had flok compatibility, people occasionally hopped over to flok to avoid weathers. you could spot a weather avoider on a name weather day, for example, because they had their own custom name while everyone else’s was overriden. no nudel was the same, but it became even more your own responsibility! and people got really into it.

i think there’s an enjoyable skill in being able to handle a nudel weather. it’s practice of not needing anything. it means you can let things die! it’s a reaffirming that the important thing is not the existence of the tool but the community surrounding the tool. but mostly… it’s just a bit of a laugh that you get to share with people around the world

foggy weather got added at ICLC 2025 after a jammer came up with the idea. it’s a bit of a flex / a skill to be able to jam during it. give it a try next time it turns up. it’s a quieter jam for sure, but that’s fun too :)
